Short description
Asterix at the Olympic Games follows the Gauls as they travel to Greece to help a young warrior named Alafolix win the hand of Princess Irina. She has declared that she will marry whoever triumphs at the Olympic Games, and Brutus, the son of Julius Caesar, is competing for the same prize. While Brutus schemes to control the competition and to remove his father from power, Asterix and Obelix use the druid's magic potion to guide their friend through the events.
The film was directed by Frédéric Forestier and Thomas Langmann, the second feature in the directing filmography listed for the pair, arriving after The Peacekeeper and Dead Weight and before later titles such as Open Season and The Infallibles. Langmann also co-wrote the screenplay and produced. Gérard Depardieu plays Obelix and Clovis Cornillac plays Asterix, with Stéphane Rousseau as Alafolix, José Garcia as Couverdepus, Franck Dubosc as Assurancetourix and Jean-Pierre Cassel as Panoramix. The production involved companies from France, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Italy.
Released in January 2008, the film carried a budget of about 97 million dollars and took roughly 132 million dollars worldwide. Audience scores are modest and closely matched on IMDb, where it holds 5.2 out of 10 from around 35,000 votes, and on TMDB, where it also stands at 5.2 from more than 2,000 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began on June 19, 2006, and for a while took place in the Fontainebleau forest, but the film crew soon found themselves at a studio in Alicante, where an Olympic stadium had already been erected.
- Like Caesar in this film, Alain Delon often speaks about himself in the third person.
- Real athletes appeared in cameo roles in the film: racing driver Michael Schumacher, tennis player Amélie Mauresmo, basketball player Tony Parker, and footballer Zinedine Zidane (although initially it was assumed that it would be David Beckham).
