Mumford

Mumford is a comedy-drama about a psychologist who arrives in the small Oregon town that shares his name and quickly builds a practice there. His approach is informal and plain-spoken rather than strictly professional, and it draws patients away from the two therapists already working in the area. Among the people he treats are a man fixated on erotic novels, an unhappily married woman who shops compulsively, a computer magnate and a café waitress he tries to match up, and a young woman with chronic fatigue syndrome, for whom his feelings become more than clinical. He also makes enemies: the rival therapists, joined by a narcissistic lawyer whom Mumford refused to take on, set out to dig into his past and damage his standing in the town.

Lawrence Kasdan directed and wrote the screenplay, his ninth film as director after French Kiss. Loren Dean plays the title role, with Hope Davis, Jason Lee, Alfre Woodard, Zooey Deschanel and Mary McDonnell in the cast. Made for about 28 million dollars, it returned roughly 5 million worldwide and received mixed-to-positive audience scores, 6.8 on IMDb from around 9,800 votes and 6.5 on TMDB from a much smaller sample.
