Fun with Dick and Jane

Dick Harper has a well-paid job as an aerospace executive and he and his wife Jane have just moved into a new house when he is suddenly fired. Unemployment benefits prove far too small to cover their debts, and Jane's search for work and a request to her parents for a loan do not solve the problem. The couple's situation changes by chance when they witness a robbery at a loan office, which gives them the idea of taking what they need by force. Their first attempts are clumsy, but they soon discover an aptitude for the crime.

Ted Kotcheff directed the film, which came after Wake in Fright in his filmography, from a screenplay by David Giler, Jerry Belson and Mordecai Richler. George Segal and Jane Fonda play the title couple, with Ed McMahon as Dick's former boss Charlie Blanchard and smaller roles for Richard Gautier, Allan Miller and Hank Garcia. The production had a budget of five million dollars and returned fourteen million worldwide.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from around 5,200 votes, and on TMDB it has 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from fourteen reviews puts it roughly in line with the audience scores. Running 95 minutes, it is a crime comedy that came near the midpoint of the director's career.
