Short description
The Godfather Part III continues the story of the Corleone family, picking up years after the events of its predecessor. Michael Corleone, now older, is trying to move the family's interests into legitimate business and to repair his standing in society, seeking a measure of forgiveness for his past. His efforts centre on a deal with the Vatican, but rivalries within the criminal world and within his own circle work against him. He also takes an interest in Vincent Mancini, his late brother Sonny's son, who becomes a possible heir, while Michael's daughter Mary and Vincent become involved with each other.
Francis Ford Coppola directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo, returning to the series he had begun in 1972. It is the sixteenth of the twenty-six features Coppola has directed, arriving between New York Stories and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Al Pacino again plays Michael, with Diane Keaton and Talia Shire reprising their roles; Andy García, Eli Wallach and Joe Mantegna join the cast. The production credits list a large ensemble, with 111 credited cast members and 280 credited crew.
Made for 54 million dollars, the film took about 137 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10, while on TMDB it has 7.4 from over seven thousand votes. A film critics' rating of 6.6 from 68 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Francis Ford Coppola wanted to film a fourth part of "The Godfather." Andy Garcia and Leonardo DiCaprio were to play the main roles. However, the filming did not take place due to the author's death.
- The opera sung by Anthony, Michael Corleone’s son, is Pietro Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" (Rustic Honor).
- Robert De Niro wanted to participate in the project, but Coppola, after consideration, turned him down.
- Due to disagreements with Paramount, Robert Duvall did not participate in the project, and one of the key characters, Tom Hagen, was removed from the script.
- The plot is partially based on ideas published in David Yallop's book "In the Name of God".
- The full video version of the film has a runtime of 169 minutes.
- Sofia Coppola (daughter of director Francis Ford Coppola) plays the role of Michael Corleone's daughter, but in the film "The Godfather" (1972) she played his nephew as a child. Winona Ryder was supposed to play this role, but declined in favor of a role in "Edward Scissorhands" (1990).
- Instead of Andy Garcia, the role of Vincent could have been played by: Alec Baldwin, Matt Dillon, Vincent Spano, Val Kilmer, Charlie Sheen, Billy Zane, Nicolas Cage.
- Each of the three parts of the film begins with a celebration: the first part features the wedding of Connie Corleone, the second – the first communion of Anthony Corleone, Michael’s son. The final part of the trilogy opens with Michael being awarded an order by the Catholic Church.
- In the novel “The Godfather,” Michael Corleone had two sons, however, in the film he has a son and a daughter.
