Short description

Scanners II: The New Order is a Canadian science fiction action film set in a world where certain people, known as scanners, possess telepathic abilities that let them read minds, control behaviour and even kill. A corrupt police commander named John Forrester recruits these scanners to help him seize control of the city. He brings in David Kellum, a young man who does not yet understand the power he carries, and who initially goes along with Forrester's plans. When David learns what Forrester is really after, he turns against him and goes on the run. Forrester sends another scanner, Peter Drak, after him, while David finds he has a sister, Alice, who shares his abilities. Together they try to stop Forrester from building his own scanner force.

The film is directed by Christian Duguay, the first of 13 films he directed in chronological order, and was written by B.J. Nelson from a story by David Cronenberg's earlier film. David Hewlett plays David Kellum, with Deborah Raffin as Julie Vale, Yvan Ponton as Commander John Forrester, Isabelle Mejias as Alice Leonardo, Tom Butler as Doctor Morse and Raoul Max Trujillo as Peter Drak. It runs 104 minutes and was produced by René Malo on a budget of 5 million dollars. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 180 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The veterinary college David attends is named after Sir Rodwick Gibbons. This is a fictional persona whose surname is derived from the film's cinematographer, Rodney Gibbons.
  • The college professor is played by Victor Knight, who appeared in David Cronenberg's film Scanners (1980). Thus, Knight became the only actor from the original film to appear in the sequel.
