Ricky, a young man recently released from a psychiatric hospital, has become fixated on Marina, an actress he once spent a night with. Convinced they are meant to build a life together, he tracks her down and takes her captive in her own home, determined to make her love him.
Pedro Almodóvar directed and co-wrote the film with Yuyi Beringola; it was the fourth of the twenty-two features he has directed, arriving after Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and before High Heels. Antonio Banderas plays Ricky and Victoria Abril plays Marina, with supporting turns from Loles León, Julieta Serrano, María Barranco and Rossy de Palma among a credited cast of twenty-nine. Produced by El Deseo, the film mixes comedy, drama and romance.
Its ratings sit in similar territory across platforms: on IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 34,000 votes, while on TMDB it scores 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 725 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10 from thirty-two reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores. The film took about 4 million dollars worldwide.
