Ghosts of the Abyss follows James Cameron as he returns to the wreck of the Titanic, the ocean liner that struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic in April 1912, killing around 1,500 people. Accompanied by actor Bill Paxton and a group of historians, marine scientists and underwater specialists, he descends more than four kilometres in submersibles to inspect the broken hull and the surviving interiors. Small remotely operated vehicles move inside the ship to capture images of cabins, staircases and fittings that no one had seen since the sinking, while historical records and testimony from survivors are set against what the cameras find. The expedition also revisits the making of Cameron's earlier Titanic.
The film is a documentary released in 2003 in 3D for large-format screens, running 91 minutes and produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Walden Media and Earthship Productions on a budget of about 13 million dollars. It earned roughly 17 million dollars worldwide. It is the eighth of the fifteen films Cameron has directed, arriving between Titanic and Aliens of the Deep, and he also produced it with John Bruno and Chuck Comisky. Paxton, John Broadwater, Cameron, Charles Pellegrino, Lewis Abernathy and Mike Cameron appear as themselves. It holds a 7.4/10 critics' rating from 101 reviews, while audiences give it 6.8/10 on IMDb from 6,800 votes and 6.8/10 on TMDB from 237 votes.
