Short description

A videographer named Aaron accepts a high-paying, one-day job found through a cryptic online advertisement. He travels to a secluded mountain town to film a man named Josef, who claims he wants to record messages for his unborn child because of a terminal illness. While the project initially seems sincere, Josef's behavior becomes increasingly strange and dangerous as the day progresses, revealing that he is not the person he pretended to be.

The horror thriller was directed by Patrick Brice, who also stars as Aaron Franklin. This was the first of five films directed by Brice, followed by The Overnight, Creep 2, Corporate Animals, and There's Someone Inside Your House. Mark Duplass stars as Josef and served as a producer alongside Jason Blum. The cast also includes Katie Aselton, who provides the voice of Angela.

The film received generally positive feedback from both viewers and professional reviewers. On IMDb, it holds a 6.3 rating based on 65,383 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.4 rating from 1,718 votes. Film critics gave the movie a higher score of 7.5 based on 34 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Practically the entire film is a result of improvisation. The shooting plans consisted only of short notes like "recording a conversation while driving a car".
  • Since the film is based on conversations between Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass, much of it consists of improvisation. A large amount of footage was shot, which was shown to friends and acquaintances. As a result, based on their advice, what began as a black comedy turned into a horror film. At least three alternative endings to the film have been preserved.
  • A vast amount of footage was shot, which was then shown to friends and acquaintances. At least three alternative versions of the film's ending have been preserved.
