Nobody Knows is a Japanese drama about four children living with their mother, Keiko, in a small Tokyo apartment. Each child has a different father, none of them attends school, and the existence of three of them is kept from the landlord. When Keiko leaves, providing only a small amount of money and a note asking twelve-year-old Akira to look after the others, the children are left to manage on their own in a household where the eldest gradually has to shoulder the role of parent. Supplies run low and everyday life becomes a struggle to get by in a home without electricity, gas or water while the landlord presses for rent.
Hirokazu Kore-eda directed and wrote the screenplay and also produced the film, which came after After Life and before Still Walking in his work as a director. Yuya Yagira plays Akira, with Ayu Kitaura, Hiei Kimura and Momoko Shimizu as his siblings, Hanae Kan as Saki and YOU as Keiko. It runs 141 minutes.
The film holds a rating of 8 out of 10 on IMDb from over 30,000 votes and the same score on TMDB, where the vote count is in the hundreds. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 93 reviews places professional assessments in line with how audiences have received it.
