Sophie Barthes directed this adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's novel, set in nineteenth-century rural France. Emma Rouault, raised on her father's farm, marries Charles Bovary, a country doctor who adores her. She soon finds provincial married life far removed from the romance and refinement she has read about and imagined. Restless in the small town of Yonville, she drifts toward flirtation, luxury and debt, drawn on by the merchant Monsieur Lheureux and by a young clerk, Leon Dupuis.
Mia Wasikowska plays Emma, with Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Charles, Rhys Ifans as Lheureux, Ezra Miller as Leon, Logan Marshall-Green as the Marquis and Laura Carmichael as Henriette. Barthes wrote the screenplay with Felipe Marino and produced alongside Joe Neurauter and Jaime Mateus-Tique; the production involved companies from Germany, Belgium and the United States and a budget of about 8 million dollars.
It was Barthes's first feature as director, followed years later by The Pod Generation. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 9,300 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from 423 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 5.7 from 68 reviews, leaving audiences and reviewers closely aligned on the film. Its running time is 118 minutes.
