Released in 2015, Black or White is a drama about Elliot Anderson, a Los Angeles lawyer whose wife has just died in a car accident. Their daughter had earlier died in childbirth, so Elliot has been raising his granddaughter Eloise, who is of mixed heritage, largely on his own. His grief has pushed him toward heavy drinking, and when Eloise's paternal grandmother, Rowena, files for custody, claiming the girl should be raised by her African American father's family, Elliot fights the case in court rather than give her up.
Mike Binder directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced alongside Kevin Costner and Todd Lewis. It is the fifth film Binder directed, following Blankman, The Upside of Anger, Man About Town and Reign Over Me. Costner plays Elliot, with Jillian Estell as Eloise, Octavia Spencer as Rowena, and Jennifer Ehle, Mpho Koaho and Bill Burr in supporting roles; thirty actors are credited.
Made for about 9 million dollars, the film took roughly 22 million worldwide, a solid multiple of its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from around 14,000 votes; on TMDB, 6.8 from a few hundred. A critics' score of 5.2 from 102 reviews puts professional opinion below the audience ratings.
