Caro diario is a 1993 Italian-French comedy-drama written, directed by and starring Nanni Moretti, who plays a version of himself. Structured as a diary in three chapters, it follows Moretti through a summer in Rome on his Vespa, past shuttered shops and empty streets; a visit to a friend, Gerardo, who has withdrawn to the Aeolian island of Lipari, where the two set off together between the surrounding islets; and a stay in the care of doctors who cannot agree on what is causing his illness. Renato Carpentieri appears as Gerardo, with Claudia Della Seta, Lorenzo Alessandri and Raffaella Lebboroni among the credited cast of 32.
The film sits between Bianca and The Son's Room in the sequence of features Moretti has directed, and it draws on autobiographical material. It was produced by Moretti and Angelo Barbagallo, with Canal+, RAI, La Sept Cinéma and Sacher Film involved.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 527 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7 out of 10 from 20 reviews, placing the two within close range of each other across a large gap in sample size.
