Fathers and Daughters follows Jake Davis, a Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist in New York whose life unravels after he loses his wife in a car crash. Left to raise their young daughter Katie on his own, he struggles with a head injury, seizures and worsening mental illness, and while he undergoes treatment Katie is placed in the care of relatives. Years later, Katie is a social worker in Manhattan, still carrying the effects of a disrupted childhood and finding it hard to form lasting relationships.
Gabriele Muccino directed the film from a screenplay by Brad Desch. It is the sixth of the ten features listed for Muccino, arriving between Playing for Keeps and There's No Place Like Home. Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried play Jake and Katie, with Aaron Paul, Diane Kruger, Jane Fonda and Bruce Greenwood among a credited cast of thirty-one. The production, mounted by Italian and American companies, had a budget of about 22 million dollars.
Made in English and released in 2015, the drama runs 116 minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.2 from 1,071 votes, and the relatively small number of votes suggests a modest international audience rather than a wide mainstream one.
