A.J. Manglehorn is a locksmith in a small Texas town, living a routine built around work, his cat and the same familiar stops each day. He is still haunted by Clara, the woman he lost roughly forty years earlier, and he writes her letters that keep coming back. His contact with his son Jacob is strained, and his pride in a former protege, Gary, has curdled now that Gary has gone his own way. A cautious friendship with Dawn, a warm-natured bank teller he sees regularly, offers a possible way out of his isolation.
David Gordon Green directed the film, the eighth of the fourteen features he has made in chronological order, between Our Brand Is Crisis and Stronger. Paul Logan wrote the screenplay, and Green produced with Derrick Tseng and Molly Conners. Al Pacino plays Manglehorn, with Holly Hunter as Dawn, Harmony Korine as Gary, Chris Messina as Jacob and Natalie Makenna as Clara Massey. The production had a budget of four million dollars, and the credited cast numbers thirty-six.
The film is a drama running ninety-seven minutes, made in the United States by Rough House Pictures and Worldview Entertainment. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 226 votes, a modest response from a limited number of viewers.
