Yi Yi follows NJ Jian, an engineer in his forties living in Taipei with his wife Min-Min, their two children and Min-Min's elderly mother. The family's routines are disrupted around the wedding of Min-Min's brother, when the grandmother falls into a coma, leaving each member of the household to confront questions about purpose, love and the shape their lives have taken. At work, NJ clashes with the direction of his computer company and weighs a partnership with Ota, a game designer. A chance reunion with Sherry, a woman he loved years earlier, leads him to travel to Japan under the pretext of business.
Edward Yang wrote and directed the film, his sixth feature following Taipei Story, Terrorizers, A Brighter Summer Day and A Confucian Confusion. Wu Nien-Jen plays NJ, with Elaine Jin as Min-Min, Issey Ogata as Ota, Kelly Lee and Jonathan Chang as the children, and Hsi-Sheng Chen as A-Di, among a credited cast of 92. The film runs 174 minutes and was produced by Shin'ya Kawai and Naoko Tsukeda through companies in Taiwan and Japan, taking about 1 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 8.1/10 from 34,000 votes and on TMDB 7.9/10 from 706 votes, while critics give it 9/10 from 92 reviews, a notably stronger showing than either audience measure.
