Rosewood

Rosewood is set in Florida in 1923, where a prosperous Black community lives alongside the white residents of the neighboring town of Sumner. When a white woman from Sumner claims she was assaulted by a Black man she cannot identify, her accusation sets off a wave of violence. A mob descends on Rosewood, burning it and attacking its inhabitants. Amid the chaos, a World War I veteran and store owner named Mann, along with a few others, including the white shopkeeper John Wright, try to protect those caught up in the destruction. The film is based on a real episode in American history.

John Singleton directed the film, his fourth feature after Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice and Higher Learning. Gregory Poirier wrote the screenplay, and Jon Peters produced it for Warner Bros. Pictures, Peters Entertainment and New Deal Productions. Ving Rhames plays Mann, with Jon Voight as John Wright, Don Cheadle as Sylvester Carrier, Bruce McGill as Duke Purdy and Elise Neal as Beulah. The cast runs to thirty-two credited performers. The production had a budget of 30 million dollars and took in about 13 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds a 7.2 rating from roughly 9,400 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.5 from about 123 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 54 reviews places it close to the audience score on IMDb, higher than the TMDB figure, though the far larger vote count behind the IMDb average makes that score the more representative audience measure.
