The screenplay was written by George Saunders and John Bryant Hedberg.

What's left behind the scenes
- Originally, this film was not intended to be part of the “American Ninja” franchise. The “Cannon Pictures” company filmed it under the title “American Dragons” (under which title it was even shown on cable television), but before its release, the title was changed to “American Ninja 5.” This explains why David Bradley plays Joe and not Sean Davidson, whom he played for Cedric Sandstrom in the 1989 action films “American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt” and a year later – in “American Ninja 4: The Annihilation.”
