Antoine Doinel, the alter ego of director François Truffaut played by Jean-Pierre Léaud, has married Christine, played by Claude Jade, and the young couple in Paris settles into a modest domestic routine. He earns a living coloring artificial flowers, she gives violin lessons at home, and he works fitfully on a novel. Christine becomes pregnant with their first child while Antoine drifts into an affair with Kyoko, a young Japanese woman, unsettling the marriage.

Bed and Board, released under the original title Domicile conjugal, is a comedy-drama that continues the semi-autobiographical series Truffaut built around this character. It is the ninth of the fourteen features he directed, arriving between The Bride Wore Black and Day for Night, and he wrote the screenplay with Claude de Givray and Bernard Revon and produced it with Marcel Berbert and André Mucchielli. Alongside Léaud and Jade, the cast includes Daniel Ceccaldi, Claire Duhamel, Hiroko Matsumoto and Daniel Boulanger, with forty credited performers in all.

The film holds a rating of 7.4 on IMDb from around eleven thousand votes and 7.1 on TMDB from a much smaller number, while the critics' score stands at 7.5 from twenty reviews, so critics placed it slightly above the general audience. The Italian and French co-production runs ninety-seven minutes.
