Short description
In Prohibition-era Boston, Joe Coughlin, the son of a police captain, turns his back on his upbringing and becomes an outlaw. After a confrontation with a powerful crime boss goes badly wrong, he leaves the city for Florida, where he builds a new position for himself in the bootlegging trade. His work there brings him into conflict with rival operators and with the Ku Klux Klan, and he finds that the life he has chosen demands he trust no one.
Ben Affleck directed and wrote the screenplay, and plays Joe Coughlin. The film is his fourth feature as director, following Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo. Leonardo DiCaprio is among the producers through Appian Way, alongside Jennifer Todd and Affleck. The cast includes Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Remo Girone, Robert Glenister and Matthew Maher, with 40 credited performers and 60 credited crew members.
Released in December 2016, the film had a budget of 65 million US dollars and returned 23 million US dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from about 62,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 1,400 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 237 reviews places it below the audience scores on both sites.

- Initially, the novel's author, Lehane, was concerned that Ben Affleck was not suitable for the role of Joe Coughlin, believing that an actor with such on-screen charisma would struggle to convey the protagonist's underlying treachery and shame. However, to his credit, Affleck did not deem it beneath him to audition for the role, apparently dispelling all the author's fears.
- Jennifer Lawrence and Lindsay Lohan were considered for the leading female roles.

- This is the second time Ben Affleck has directed a film adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel, since the release of "Gone Baby Gone" (2007).
- This is the second time, after "The Town" (2010), that Chris Cooper has been involved in a project where Ben Affleck is both director and actor.
