Chato's Land

Chato's Land is a Western set in 1870s New Mexico. Chato, a half-Apache man who moves between two cultures, kills a sheriff in self-defence and flees. A posse of white men rides after him, led by Quincey Whitmore, a former Confederate officer determined to see him hanged. Chato knows the country, and the pursuit turns into a slow contest in which the hunted man draws his pursuers deeper into harsh terrain. As the chase drags on and the men fail to catch him, their group begins to fall apart from within.

Michael Winner directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Gerald Wilson. It was the second of the thirteen films he directed in chronological order, following Lawman in 1971 and preceding The Mechanic in 1972. Charles Bronson plays Chato, with Jack Palance as Quincey Whitmore. The cast also includes James Whitmore, Simon Oakland, Ralph Waite and Richard Jordan, among twenty-three credited performers. The production was a British, Spanish and American co-production involving United Artists and Scimitar Films, and it runs 100 minutes.
