Coogan's Bluff

Walt Coogan is a deputy sheriff from Arizona sent to New York City to collect a prisoner and bring him back west for trial. When the transfer goes wrong and the man gets away with help from his associates, Coogan takes it upon himself to find him again, working through a city whose police force has little patience for his methods. The clash between his frontier habits and big-city procedure shapes the pursuit.

Don Siegel directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Dean Riesner, Howard A. Rodman and Herman Miller. It was the ninth of the eighteen features Siegel directed, following The Killers and preceding Madigan. Clint Eastwood plays Coogan, with Lee J. Cobb as Lieutenant McElroy, Susan Clark as Julie Roth, Tisha Sterling as Linny Raven, Don Stroud as James Ringerman and Betty Field as Ellen Ringerman among a credited cast of fifty.

Made by Universal Pictures with Malpaso Productions on a budget of two million dollars, the film returned three million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 out of 10 from 388 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 19 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
