Everybody's Fine

Eight months after his wife's death, retired Frank Goode hopes his four grown children will come home for a visit. One by one they cancel, leaving him alone with his plans. Ignoring his doctor's advice, and despite a heart condition, he packs a bag and sets off by bus and train across the United States to see each of them in turn. His children live in different cities and appear to have built successful, settled lives. As Frank travels from one to the next, he begins to see that their circumstances are not what they have led him to believe, and that his late wife was the one who had long held the scattered family together. The film is a remake of Giuseppe Tornatore's 1990 Italian film Stanno tutti bene.

Kirk Jones directed and wrote the screenplay, the third of the six features he has made, following Waking Ned and Nanny McPhee. Robert De Niro leads as Frank, with Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell as three of the children, and Melissa Leo and Damian Young among a credited cast of 46. It was produced by Ted Field, Gianni Nunnari and Vittorio Cecchi Gori, and cost about 21 million dollars.

Released in December 2009, the film took roughly 16 million dollars worldwide, less than its budget. Audiences are more favourable than critics: it holds 7.1/10 on IMDb from around 67,000 votes and 6.8/10 on TMDB from over a thousand, while the critics' rating stands at 5.5/10 across 141 reviews.
