Brewster McCloud is a young man who has made his home inside a disused fallout shelter beneath the Houston Astrodome. He keeps to himself, studies birds, and works toward a single goal: building a pair of wings and flying under the stadium's roof. Louise, a woman who watches over him, has her own ideas about how to protect his plan, and the people who get in Brewster's way begin turning up dead, their faces marked in a strange way. The police take an interest, and Brewster's secret project becomes harder to keep hidden.
Robert Altman directed the film, the fourth of the twenty-one features listed for him in chronological order, following McCabe & Mrs. Miller and preceding The Long Goodbye. Doran William Cannon wrote the screenplay, and James Margellos and Lou Adler produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Lion's Gate Films and Lou Adler-John Phillips Productions. Bud Cort plays Brewster, with Sally Kellerman as Louise, Michael Murphy, William Windom, Shelley Duvall and René Auberjonois among the credited cast of thirty. The film mixes comedy and fantasy across its 105-minute running time.
On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from about 6,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from a much smaller set of 101 votes, indicating a modest but settled following. A critics' rating of 7.3 from 23 reviews sits above both audience figures.
