Short description
During the last forty years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He has witnessed the major events of our recent history: international conflicts, starvations and exodus… He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of the wild fauna and flora, of grandiose landscapes: a huge photographic project which is a tribute to the planet's beauty. Salgado's life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last journeys, and by Wim Wenders, a photographer himself.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's title is a reference to the Bible. Matthew 5:13: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how shall it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
  • Regarding the photograph of the gorilla with a finger in its mouth, Sebastião Salgado claims in the film that it is the animal's reaction to recognizing itself after seeing its reflection in the lens. However, scientific research shows that gorillas do not recognize themselves in a mirror.
