The Bounty

The Bounty recounts the mutiny aboard the British naval vessel H.M.S. Bounty during a voyage to Tahiti in the late 1780s. Sent to collect breadfruit plants, the ship reaches the island, where the crew's time ashore and growing attachment to local women change their mood about continuing the journey. Tensions between the ship's commander, Lieutenant William Bligh, and his first officer, Fletcher Christian, escalate into open revolt. The story follows both the mutineers' attempt to escape the reach of the British fleet and Bligh's effort to bring the men who stayed loyal to him to safety across a vast stretch of open ocean.

Directed by Roger Donaldson, this was the first of the fifteen films he has directed in chronological order, followed by No Way Out in 1987. Robert Bolt wrote the screenplay, and Bernard Williams and Dino De Laurentiis produced. Mel Gibson plays Fletcher Christian opposite Anthony Hopkins as William Bligh, with Daniel Day-Lewis as John Fryer, Bernard Hill as William Cole, Liam Neeson as Charles Churchill and Phil Davis as Edward Young among the twenty-eight credited cast members. The production, made in the United Kingdom and the United States, cost about 25 million US dollars and returned roughly 9 million worldwide.
