Set in 1814 in the city of Edo, this historical drama focuses on O-Ei, the daughter of a renowned and temperamental artist named Tetsuzo, also known as Hokusai. While her father is celebrated across Japan for his diverse range of work, O-Ei possesses a similar talent and stubborn nature. Working largely in secret from their cluttered studio, she frequently creates art under her father's name without receiving credit. The story follows her struggle to establish her own identity as an independent woman and artist while remaining in the shadow of her father's fame.
Directed by Keiichi Hara, the film is the tenth in a series of works by the director, following his 2010 film Colorful. The voice cast includes Anne Watanabe as O-Ei and Yutaka Matsushige as Katsushika Hokusai, with supporting roles provided by Kumiko Aso, Gaku Hamada, Kengo Kora, and Jun Miho. The screenplay was written by Miho Maruo, and the production involved Studio Fuga, The Asahi Shimbun, and Production I.G.
The film was released on May 9, 2015, with a runtime of 90 minutes. It has a rating of 6.7/10 on IMDb based on 3,700 votes and a matching 6.7/10 on TMDB from 158 votes. Film critics gave the movie a higher score of 7.3/10 across 59 reviews.
