White Zombie

White Zombie is a 1932 American horror film set in Haiti. A young couple, Madeleine and Neil, travel to the island, where a wealthy plantation owner named Charles Beaumont becomes fixated on Madeleine. After she rejects him, Beaumont turns to the voodoo master Legendre, who uses his powers to reduce her to a will-less zombie. Neil, together with a missionary doctor who knows the local beliefs, sets out to bring her back. The film's zombies are not flesh-eating monsters but enslaved, soulless figures under a sorcerer's control, and the story ends in a confrontation at Legendre's mill.

Victor Halperin directed and Edward Halperin produced through their own company, with Phil Goldstone also credited as producer. It was an early entry in the director's filmography, and the 67-minute feature is widely recognized as the first zombie feature film. Bela Lugosi plays Legendre, the role that anchors the film, while Madge Bellamy and John Harron appear as the couple and Robert Frazer as Beaumont. Joseph Cawthorn plays Dr. Bruner.
