Burt Reynolds plays Richard Malone, a former CIA assassin who wants nothing more than a quiet retirement in the Pacific Northwest. His plans change when he passes through the small town of Comstock, Oregon, and his car breaks down. While he waits for repairs, Malone befriends Paul Barlow, a widowed mechanic raising his teenage daughter Jo, and learns that the town is under the thumb of the wealthy and ruthless Charles Delaney. Delaney uses bribery and violence to control the area, and Malone soon finds himself drawn into a conflict with him. The film is based on the novel Shotgun by William Wingate.
Harley Cokeliss directed Malone, his third feature after Battletruck and Black Moon Rising, from a screenplay by Christopher Frank. Alongside Reynolds and Cliff Robertson as Delaney, the cast includes Cynthia Gibb, Kenneth McMillan, Scott Wilson and Lauren Hutton, with 31 credited performers in all. Orion Pictures produced the film on a budget of 10 million dollars, and it returned about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 4,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6 from a much smaller base of 78 votes.
