Short description

Set in 1967, Bullet in the Blood follows three friends who grew up together in Hong Kong. After a violent encounter with a local thug leaves the man dead, Ben, Frank and Paul flee the territory to escape both the police and the gang seeking revenge. They make their way to Saigon, where they hope to start over amid the chaos of the Vietnam War, only to find that the country's criminal underworld and the conflict itself pull them into a spiral of danger and betrayal that tests their loyalty to one another.

John Woo directed, co-wrote and produced the film, the seventh of the twenty-two features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Just Heroes and Once a Thief. Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Jacky Cheung and Waise Lee Chi-Hung play the three friends, with Simon Yam, Fennie Yuen Kit-Ying and Yolinda Yan Chor-Sin also starring. The production, made through Golden Princess Film Production Limited and Woo's own company, had a budget of four million dollars and returned roughly one million at the worldwide box office.

Audience reception has been solid, with a rating of 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb from about thirteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.6 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of around three hundred. A film critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10, drawn from nine reviews, places professional appraisal somewhat above the general audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • John Woo originally conceived the film as a prequel to 'A Better Tomorrow', but a disagreement with the producer derailed the project. However, 'Bullet in the Head' contains one scene that directly references the 1986 film: in a nightclub, the heroes are forced to down a bottle of liquor at gunpoint – an episode Mark, Chow Yun-Fat's character, recounted in 'A Better Tomorrow'.
  • John Woo's original version ran for over three hours. Like with 'A Better Tomorrow 2' (1987), the director was forced to cut the film to just over two hours. However, according to Woo himself, the version shown in Hong Kong the day before the premiere ran for 2 hours and 35 minutes. It was decided, however, that even this was too long, so all versions of the film already sent to cinemas had to be urgently cut and then resent. Even after all these editing struggles, due to local censorship and local market demands, many different versions of the film with varying lengths exist.
  • At the end of the film, in the scene in the underground parking lot, it can be seen that the moment of the collision with the Mercedes is repeated twice: the Mercedes first moves and receives almost no damage, then immediately a piece is inserted where the car crashes into a parked Mercedes, already visibly damaged in the collision.
