Lake Mungo
Short description
Lake Mungo follows the Palmer family after sixteen-year-old Alice drowns while swimming near a dam. Her parents, June and Russell, and her brother Mathew are left to grieve, but their household soon becomes the setting for a series of unexplained occurrences. Convinced that Alice may be trying to reach them, the family approaches a psychic and a parapsychologist, whose inquiries suggest that Alice kept a hidden side of her life. That hidden history leads back to a place called Lake Mungo, where a different account of her final months comes to light.
The film is an Australian production directed and written by Joel Anderson, his feature debut, and produced by David Rapsey and Georgie Nevile. It was made for about two million dollars and runs eighty-seven minutes. The cast is headed by Rosie Traynor as June, David Pledger as Russell, Martin Sharpe as Mathew and Talia Zucker as Alice, with Tania Lentini and Cameron Strachan among the thirty-nine credited performers.
Its ratings divide sharply. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around thirty-seven thousand votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from roughly seven hundred votes. A critics' rating of 8.4 out of 10 from twenty-four reviews places professional assessment far above the broader audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- The events depicted in the film are fictional, but Lake Mungo is real. It is located in the Australian state of New South Wales, and some scenes were filmed there. The dried-up Lake Mungo attracts archaeologists. In 1968, the remains of an Aboriginal woman were discovered there. She was ritually buried approximately 40,000 years ago. These are among the earliest anatomically modern human remains found in the world. Five years later, the remains of a man were discovered in the same location.
- The stones covered with drawings shown in the film are real. They are located in the Australian state of Victoria and are called the “Sisters Rocks” in honor of three sisters who arrived here among the first settlers during the gold rush in the mid-1800s.
- When the photo of Ellis's ghost is shown in the backyard, the ghost of Ellis himself is sitting on a bench in the upper right corner of the frame.
- On the first night, you can already spot the neighbor on the right side of the screen.
