Once Upon a Crime

Once Upon a Crime follows two American tourists in Rome, an out-of-work actor named Julian and Phoebe, a woman who has just lost her job. They find a lost dog that carries the promise of a large reward and set off for Monte Carlo to return it. When the animal's wealthy owner is found dead, the pair panic and flee, drawing suspicion onto themselves while Inspector Bonnard tries to work out who among several traveling couples and hangers-on is responsible.

The film is a comedy mystery directed by Eugene Levy, released in 1992 and running 94 minutes. It was his first feature as director, ahead of Sodbusters two years later. The screenplay is credited to Nancy Meyers, Steve Kluger and Charles Shyer, and Dino De Laurentiis produced. John Candy, Jim Belushi, Cybill Shepherd, Sean Young, Richard Lewis and Ornella Muti lead a cast of 27 credited performers, with 43 credited crew.

Made for a reported 18 million dollars, the film returned about 4 million worldwide, a poor result against its cost. On TMDB it holds 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 130 votes, suggesting modest and mixed audience interest. The story is a remake of a 1960 Italian crime comedy.
