Journey to Italy

Katherine and Alex Joyce, an English couple married for eight years, travel to Italy to sell a villa near Naples that Alex has inherited from his uncle. Away from their usual life in London and surrounded by a country and culture not their own, they confront the distance that has grown between them. Differing temperaments and repeated misunderstandings strain the marriage further, and their time in the villa becomes an occasion to take stock of what they have become to each other.

Roberto Rossellini directed the film, his seventh feature, following Rome, Open City, Paisan, Germany, Year Zero, Stromboli and Europa '51. He wrote the screenplay with Vitaliano Brancati and produced it with Adolfo Fossataro and Alfredo Guarini. Ingrid Bergman plays Katherine and George Sanders plays Alex, with Maria Mauban, Anna Proclemer, Paul Müller and Leslie Daniels in supporting roles. The film runs 85 minutes and was released on 8 September 1954.

Audience response has been favorable but measured: on IMDb it holds 7.3/10 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2/10 from roughly 350 votes. A film critics' rating of 8.6/10 from 25 reviews places it noticeably higher than those viewer scores.
