Hideo Suzuki is a 35-year-old manga artist whose career has stalled and whose relationship is falling apart. After his girlfriend throws him out, he sees a woman struck by a car get up and walk away despite her injuries, which he initially takes as another of his hallucinations. When his girlfriend attacks him, Hideo realizes a disease is spreading across Tokyo that turns ordinary people into violent attackers, and he flees a city coming apart around him. He joins a schoolgirl named Hiromi and a nurse called Yabu as survivors try to escape the chaos.
The film is based on Kengo Hanazawa's manga and was directed by Shinsuke Sato, the fourth feature in a run of adaptations that also includes his two Gantz films and Another Gantz. Akiko Nogi wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Yo Oizumi as Hideo, with Kasumi Arimura as Hiromi, Masami Nagasawa as Nurse Yabu, Hisashi Yoshizawa as Iura, Yoshinori Okada as Sango and Yuu Tokui as Abe. It was made by a group of Japanese production companies led by TOHO.
Released in April 2016, the film runs 126 minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 531 votes, which suggests a modest but clearly positive response. Sato returned to manga adaptations afterward, directing Bleach and Inuyashiki the same decade and then the Kingdom series of films.
