Short description
Ford v Ferrari is set in the mid-1960s, when Henry Ford II and Lee Iacocca decide that Ford should build a car capable of beating Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the endurance race the Italian team had long dominated. To make that happen they bring in Carroll Shelby, a former racer turned designer who now builds and sells sports cars. Shelby agrees to take on the project only if Ken Miles, a British-born driver of considerable talent and a difficult temperament, is part of it. Together they set out to develop a new machine capable of challenging Ferrari on the French circuit, while also dealing with the interventions and expectations of the executives who commissioned the work, the limits of what the car can do, and their own personal struggles.
The film was directed by James Mangold, the eleventh of the thirteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Logan and preceding Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Matt Damon plays Shelby and Christian Bale plays Miles, with Jon Bernthal as Iacocca, Caitríona Balfe as Mollie Miles, Josh Lucas as Leo Beebe and Noah Jupe as Peter Miles. The screenplay is by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth and Jason Keller, and Mangold produced with Jenno Topping and Peter Chernin.
Made for about 98 million dollars and released in November 2019, it took roughly 226 million dollars worldwide. It runs 153 minutes. On IMDb it holds 8.1 out of 10 from about 565,000 votes, and on TMDB 8 out of 10 from more than 9,000 votes, while a critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 reflects 364 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- During one of the scenes on the Le Mans track, the famous Belgian racing driver Jacky Ickx can be seen in the crowd; he is a six-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
- While working on the role, Christian Bale took driving lessons at a specialized driving school run by former racer Bob Bondurant.
- According to Matt Damon, he agreed to the role in this film for the opportunity to be on set with Christian Bale.
- The Le Mans track as it was in the 1960s no longer exists. The filmmakers had to film sections of five different tracks, each time checking whether the cars were in the correct positions and taking weather conditions into account.
- Dana Gurney (1931-2018) was played by his younger son, Alex Gurney.
- The 24-hour endurance race in Daytona Beach, Florida, was filmed in Fontana, California.
- Racer Carroll Shelby (1923-2012) wears a Heuer Carrera Calibre 18 Telemeter watch. Watches from this company, TAG Heuer, are strongly associated with racing. In 1963, the company released the Carrera Collection in honor of the legendary "Carrera Panamericana" race (held from 1950 to 1954).
- The race in Daytona Beach was organized from February 5-6, 1966, while the "24 Hours of Le Mans" race was held from June 18-19 of the same year.
- Both Matt Damon and Christian Bale agreed that the easiest scene to film was the argument in the bar. Both actors’ roles involved action scenes that required weeks of memorizing every movement, whereas here they only rehearsed for 20 minutes, and didn't even need to portray anger on camera.
- According to Matt Damon, Christian Bale lost over 30 kg by the start of filming. Prior to that, Bale had gained weight for his role in Adam McKay's "Vice," and the actor had around seven months to lose it. When Damon asked Bale how he managed it, he replied that he simply stopped eating.
