X+Y is a British drama about Nathan Ellis, a teenager on the autism spectrum who is a gifted mathematician. He struggles to connect with the people around him, including his mother, and finds comfort in numbers rather than in relationships. A meeting with his unconventional teacher, Martin Humphreys, changes the direction of his life when Nathan is selected for the British team competing at the International Mathematical Olympiad. The tournament takes him away from suburban England to Cambridge and Taipei, where he forms an unexpected friendship with his mentor and meets other young competitors, including a fellow contestant who draws out emotions he has long kept at a distance.
Morgan Matthews directed the film, his debut narrative feature, and wrote the screenplay with James Graham. Asa Butterfield plays Nathan, with Rafe Spall as Humphreys, Sally Hawkins as Nathan's mother, and Eddie Marsan in the cast. Jo Yang plays the contestant Zhang Mei, and Alex Lawther appears as Isaac Cooper in the twenty-five-strong credited cast.
The film was released in 2015. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 31,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.7 from 621 votes. Film critics gave it 6.6 from 75 reviews. It made about 1 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a drama produced with backing from BBC Film and the BFI. Matthews later directed 500 Miles.
