CQ is set in Paris in 1969, where Paul, a young American filmmaker, is trying to make a name for himself. He works as an editor on Dragonfly, a science-fiction picture whose story takes place in 2001 and features a heroine dressed in pink leather. The film's director becomes infatuated with its leading lady, and his feelings for her cloud his judgment, particularly about how the film should end. When the producer grows frustrated and replaces him with a young, arrogant directing prodigy, Paul is jealous of the newcomer's success. Paul also wants to shoot a personal, cinema-verite diary of his own life, while dealing with a failing relationship and a growing attraction to the star of Dragonfly.

Roman Coppola directed and wrote the film, his first feature, released in 2001. The cast includes Jeremy Davies as Paul, Angela Lindvall as Dragonfly and Valentine, Élodie Bouchez, Gérard Depardieu, Giancarlo Giannini and Massimo Ghini, with 57 credited cast members and 52 credited crew.
