Short description
Mélancolie Mau lives alone on the French coast while her husband, an airline pilot, is away. When a stranger breaks into her home and assaults her, she fights back, kills him and gets rid of the body. She tells no one, but the secret does not stay buried for long: an American colonel turns up in town with detailed knowledge of what happened, and his questions suggest he is after something of his own, possibly connected to Mélancolie's absent husband.
René Clément directed this crime mystery, which followed Is Paris Burning? in a career that also includes Forbidden Games and Purple Noon. The screenplay is by Sébastien Japrisot, and the cast is led by Marlène Jobert as Mélancolie and Charles Bronson as Colonel Harry Dobbs, with Gabriele Tinti, Jean Gaven, Jean Piat and Jill Ireland in supporting roles.
The film, a French and Italian production running two hours, has drawn modest audience scores: 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 4,300 votes and 6.4 out of 10 on TMDB from about a hundred votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- All the numerous dialogue scenes were filmed twice—once in French and once in English. This resulted in two clearly distinct versions of the film: a French one and an English one.
- Charles Bronson learned his lines in French by ear so that his lip movements would match the spoken text. Afterward, Bronson's lines were dubbed by John Berry, who had also voiced the actor in Jean Herman's crime thriller 'Farewell, My Friend' (1968).
