Vinay is repeatedly mistaken for a jewel thief who looks almost exactly like him. Hoping to clear his name, he works with the police and poses as the criminal in order to expose the real culprit. The plan takes an unexpected turn when the thief responds by impersonating Vinay, leaving their identities thoroughly tangled.
Released in October 1967, Jewel Thief is an Indian crime drama running just over three hours. Vijay Anand directed and wrote the screenplay, while Dev Anand produced it through Navketan. Dev Anand also plays the dual roles of Amar and Vinay, appearing opposite Vyjayanthimala and Tanuja Samarth, with Ashok Kumar, D.K. Sapru and Anju Mahendru among the supporting cast.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.9 from around 2,300 votes. On TMDB its rating stands at 6.7 from a much smaller group of 21 votes. The difference in vote numbers means the larger IMDb sample carries more weight, and it points to a strong reputation among viewers decades after the film's original release.
