Summer 1969. Pearl Kantrowitz, a young wife and mother, leaves New York with her children and her mother-in-law for a bungalow colony in the Catskills, where her husband Marty stays behind to work in the city. Pearl married young and sometimes wonders what she gave up. At the colony she meets Walker Jerome, a free-spirited salesman who travels the area selling blouses, and begins an affair with him. The world of Apollo launches, Vietnam and a nearby music festival barely touch the vacationers, who keep to kosher cooking and old standards.
Diane Lane plays Pearl, with Viggo Mortensen as Walker, Liev Schreiber as Marty, Anna Paquin as her teenage daughter Alison, Tovah Feldshuh as Lillian and Bobby Boriello as Daniel. Tony Goldwyn directed from a screenplay by Pamela Gray, and produced alongside Dustin Hoffman and Neil Koenigsberg. It is the first feature Goldwyn directed, ahead of Someone Like You... The film cost about 14 million dollars. On IMDb it holds 6.6 from roughly 9,800 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.1 from a much smaller group of 119. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 36 reviews places it above both audience scores.
