SubUrbia follows a group of young adults in a suburban Texas town who have finished school but not yet settled into adult life. They spend their nights hanging around a convenience store, talking about what they might become. The routine breaks when a former classmate returns home as a successful rock musician, bringing his publicist with him. His arrival stirs up old tensions among the friends, and over the course of one long night, their relationships and plans are tested.
Richard Linklater directed the film, working from a screenplay by Eric Bogosian. It was Linklater's fourth feature, coming after Before Sunrise and before The Newton Boys, and it was produced by Anne Walker-McBay. The cast includes Giovanni Ribisi, Steve Zahn, Amie Carey, Nicky Katt, Parker Posey and Ajay Naidu.
The film was released in February 1997 and runs 121 minutes. On IMDb, its critics' rating stands at 6.4 out of 10 from 25 reviews, while on TMDB it holds a 6.2 out of 10 from 142 votes. The two scores sit close together, indicating a modest overall reception from both professional reviewers and the wider audience.
