Strange Days
Short description
Strange Days is set in Los Angeles in the final days of 1999, where a technology called SQUID records and plays back other people's sensory experiences. Lenny Nero, a former police officer now working as a street dealer in these illegal clips, refuses to handle recordings of death, preferring to revisit his own past. When he receives a disc showing the murder of a woman he knew, his old investigative instincts take over. With the help of bodyguard Mace, he looks into the killing and becomes entangled in a case involving murder, blackmail and a police cover-up. Ralph Fiennes plays Lenny, with Angela Bassett as Mace, Juliette Lewis as Faith Justin, Tom Sizemore as Max Peltier, Michael Wincott as Philo Gant and Vincent D'Onofrio as Burton Steckler.
Kathryn Bigelow directed the film, the fifth of the nine features listed for her, arriving between Point Break and K-19: The Widowmaker. James Cameron and Jay Cocks wrote the screenplay, and Cameron produced it with Steven-Charles Jaffe for 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment.
Made on a budget of 42 million dollars, the film took about 17 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from more than 1,600 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 6.5 out of 10 from 56 reviews, a narrower gap between critics and audiences than is often the case.

- Playing in a rock band in the plot, Juliette Lewis sings P.J. Harvey's songs Rid of Me (1993) and Hardly Wait. Eight years later, she founded her own rock band, Juliette and the Licks.
- One of the predictions made on TV was the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Muammar Gaddafi in the coming 21st century.
- When shown on the American channel 'Sci-Fi' on November 15, 1998, the film was cut by 29 minutes.
- Jericho One was driving a foreign jeep – a brand-new yellow Soviet UAZ – in the scene of his murder.

- Juliette Lewis, who played Faith, a punk-rock singer and Lenny's former girlfriend, wrote all of her vocal numbers herself and performed them personally.
- The main character Lenny Nero’s car is a “Mercedes-Benz S500,” which was only mass-produced in 1997. For the film, the manufacturer provided one of the first prototypes.
- The film is named after The Doors’ album Strange Days.
- During its release in the United Kingdom, many scenes of violence and sex were cut, while on the DVD, two erotic scenes were added instead.
- One of the characters in the film states in an interview that the state’s social programs don’t work, but movies about the Titanic are being made. Notably, James Cameron, who had not yet finished filming 'Titanic' at the time of the film’s premiere, is one of the screenwriters.
- The surname of the hero who makes a living trading memories recorded on optical discs is Nero. The Nero company, whose most famous product is a suite of optical disc burning software, was founded in the same year the film premiered.
