George Hammond is homeless in New York City. After being thrown out of the derelict apartment where he has been sleeping, he drifts through the streets, scraping together money and looking for somewhere safe to rest. His thoughts keep returning to Maggie, the daughter he abandoned long ago and hopes to reconnect with, and his efforts to reach her run alongside the daily business of surviving. Running out of options, he takes shelter at Bellevue, one of Manhattan's largest homeless facilities, where he meets Dixon, a veteran of the shelter system whose company pushes George to open up and to keep trying with Maggie.
Oren Moverman directed and wrote the film, his third feature after The Messenger and Rampart, and he produced it with Richard Gere, Caroline Kaplan and Bill Pohlad. Gere plays George, with Ben Vereen as Dixon, Jena Malone as Maggie, Steve Buscemi as the building manager, Danielle Brooks and Abigail Savage in supporting roles.
Released in 2015, the film received a critics' rating of 6.9/10 from 89 reviews, while audiences were cooler: it holds 5.7/10 on IMDb from around 4,700 votes and 5.6/10 on TMDB from roughly 150 votes.
