Ben Healy and his adopted son Junior have left their old town behind and settled in Mortville, a place with a striking imbalance of women to men. Ben hopes the move will give them both a fresh start, but Junior has no intention of sharing his father with anyone. When Ben begins dating again, Junior sets out to drive away every woman who comes near him, determined to keep his father to himself.

The town's many divorced women take an interest in Ben, and one wealthy, determined suitor, LaWanda Dumore, wants to marry him and remove Junior from the picture. At school Junior meets Trixie, a girl whose talent for mischief matches his own, and the two children join forces, scheming to push their respective parents together and derail the plans being made for Ben.

Brian Levant directed the film, the first in the list of his features, from a screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, with Robert Simonds producing. John Ritter plays Ben, Michael J. Oliver plays Junior, and Jack Warden appears as Big Ben Healy, alongside Laraine Newman, Amy Yasbeck and Ivyann Schwan. Made for a budget of 15 million dollars, it returned 33 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 4.9/10 from 25,000 votes, on TMDB 6/10 from 707 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 3.3/10 from 27 reviews.
