The Astronaut's Wife
Short description
The Astronaut's Wife follows Commander Spencer Armacost, a NASA astronaut who loses contact with mission control for several minutes while outside his spacecraft. He returns to Earth and leaves spaceflight behind for a quieter life with his wife, Jillian. Their reunion brings relief, but Jillian soon senses that something about her husband has shifted. Her unease is complicated when she learns she is pregnant, and her doubts about the man beside her return.
The film was written and directed by Rand Ravich, marking his debut as a feature director. Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron lead the cast as Spencer and Jillian, with Joe Morton, Clea DuVall, Nick Cassavetes and Donna Murphy in supporting roles. Produced by Andrew Lazar through Mad Chance and released by New Line Cinema, it runs 109 minutes and blends drama, science fiction and thriller elements.
Released in August 1999, the film drew weak notices, earning 4.7 out of 10 from 58 critics. Audiences were similarly unmoved: it holds 5.4 on IMDb from around 59,000 votes and 5.6 on TMDB from roughly a thousand. Against a budget of 75 million dollars, its worldwide gross of about 20 million was a substantial shortfall.
