Set in ancient Rome, The Arena follows a group of women captured by Roman soldiers and sold into slavery. Brought to the Italian town of Brundusium, they are purchased by Timarchus, who stages spectacles in the local amphitheatre. When a fight breaks out among the enslaved women, he sees a way to revive public interest in the games: putting women into the arena as gladiators. The newcomers soon understand that they are meant to die there, and they turn on their captors, rising up in a rebellion aimed at winning their freedom.
The film was directed by Steve Carver, the first of six features he made between 1974 and 1983, and written by John William Corrington and Joyce Hooper Corrington. Pam Grier plays Mamawi and Margaret Markov plays Bodicia, with Lucretia Love, Paul Müller, Daniele Vargas and Maria Pia Conte among the credited cast of forty-one. It is an Italian-American co-production from New World Pictures, Rover Film, San Jacinto Productions and Dany Film, running 81 minutes.
Released in March 1974, the film is an action-adventure made on a modest scale typical of its production companies, and it drew limited attention: on TMDB it holds a rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 51 votes.
