In Mumbai, a sanitation worker is found dead in a manhole. An ageing folk singer named Narayan Kamble is brought to court, accused of abetting the suicide by performing a provoking song that may have driven the man to take his own life. A legal case unfolds in a lower court, where the professional duties of the lawyers and the judge are shown alongside their private lives outside the courtroom.
The film is a Marathi-language drama written and directed by Chaitanya Tamhane, marking his feature debut, and produced by Vivek Gomber. Vira Sathidar plays the accused singer, with Vivek Gomber as defence lawyer Vinay Vora, Geetanjali Kulkarni as public prosecutor Nutan, and Pradeep Joshi as Judge Sanjay Sadavarte. The large credited cast runs to 153 names, reflecting the many minor figures who populate the court. The film runs 116 minutes and was released in 2015.
Audience responses are positive but divided in scale: on IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from around 5,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9/10 from 74 votes. The gap partly reflects the different sizes of the voting groups, with the larger IMDb sample indicating a solid, widely seen drama.
