Deep in the Heart

Deep in the Heart is a drama set in a remote Chinese mountain village. The discovery of a charred, unidentified body serves as the link between three separate local narratives. One story follows a young man whose attempt to escape his family's control leads to the accidental death of a local thug, tightening his bond with his father. Another centers on a woman who has suffered domestic abuse; while seeking comfort with a former lover and planning to kill her husband, she learns that he has already died. These events also impact the village leader, who faces a crisis involving his son just as he prepares to retire.

Written and directed by Xin Yukun, this was the first film in a chronological sequence of works that includes Wrath of Silence.
