Thirty years after an expedition opened the tomb of the Egyptian princess Ananka, the surviving members of that group are being killed one by one in the United States. A high priest of Karnak has crossed the ocean with the mummy Kharis, revived to carry out the vengeance of his cult against everyone who took part in the desecration. Among the targets is the archaeologist Stephen Banning, whose son John becomes drawn into the killings when he tries to understand the circumstances of his father's death. An old colleague of Stephen's, Babe Hanson, who was on the original expedition, recognizes the pattern and warns of the mummy's curse, though the authorities dismiss his account. The threat comes to center on John and his fiancee Isobel.
Harold Young directed this 61-minute Universal horror film, the third entry in the studio's series of mummy pictures, following The Mummy's Hand. Lon Chaney Jr. plays Kharis, with Dick Foran as Stephen Banning, John Hubbard as John Banning, Elyse Knox as Isobel Evans, George Zucco as Andoheb and Wallace Ford as Babe Hanson. Griffin Jay and Henry Sucher wrote the screenplay, and the credited cast runs to 42 names. The film holds a rating of 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 4,400 votes, and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 88 votes, indicating modest but persistent attention from genre viewers.
