Caged follows Marie Allen, a nineteen-year-old woman sent to a state prison in Illinois after being caught up in an armed robbery that left her husband dead. During the intake examination she learns she is pregnant, and she soon finds herself among hardened inmates and a harsh, sadistic matron. The prison's superintendent, Ruth Benton, favors more humane methods than the old guard, and the tension between discipline and cruelty plays out over Marie's confinement as she waits and hopes for parole and a chance at a decent life.
John Cromwell directed the film, which sits between Dead Reckoning (1946) and The Company She Keeps (1951) in the list of his directing credits. Virginia Kellogg and Bernard C. Schoenfeld wrote the screenplay, Jerry Wald produced it, and Warner Bros. Pictures released it in May 1950. Eleanor Parker plays Marie, with Agnes Moorehead as Ruth Benton, Hope Emerson as Evelyn Harper, Ellen Corby as Emma Barber, Betty Garde as Kitty Stark and Jan Sterling as Gita Kovsky among a credited cast of 73.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.6 from around 5,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 from roughly 92 votes. The two audience scores are close, with the larger IMDb sample somewhat higher.
