What's left behind the scenes
- The film's title is taken from a Donovan song on the 1966 album 'Sunshine Superman'.
- 'The Hour of the Witch' was the working title for Martin Scorsese's 1973 film 'Mean Streets'.
- The film was shot in 1972 on 16mm film in Pittsburgh by a very small crew, with George A. Romero serving as director, screenwriter, cinematographer, and editor.
- Originally, according to Romero's vision, the film was to be titled "Jack's Wife" and have a runtime of 130 minutes. However, distributors considered the film excessively wordy and cut the length to 89 minutes, releasing it in 1973 under the title "Hungry Wives" and positioning it as hard-core erotica. In this form, the film failed to attract audience interest. In 1982, a new reissue of the film was released titled "The Time of the Witches".
- George A. Romero's original cut is considered lost, although a 104-minute version of the film, which partially approximates it, was released on VHS under the title "Jack's Wife".
